Yesterday I was able to take a walk with one of my co-workers. We took a stroll around the historic city center, which was beautiful as always.
After our walk, we went over to a restaurant that specializes in gorditas. 🙂
In Querétaro, gorditas are typically made from corn flour dough that is either fried or cooked on the griddle.The corn cake is cut open and filled with meat, beans, cheese and onions. The specialty is gorditas migajas, which are seasoned bits of pork. The translation for gorditas migajas is ¨chubby crumbs.” It sounded like a good workout for your heart. Hahah. I tried the guacamole, which was full of delicious flavor. It was a nice balance of creamy avocado, salty cheese and citrus.For around $1 each, gorditas are an inexpensive way to fill your belly with a well-balanced meal made of natural ingredients. Yo NO quiero Taco Bell! 😀
It was also great chatting with my co-worker Doris. She is originally from Acapulco and worked for 6 years in the mining industry. She lived in the mountains near the mines. They had a communal lifestyle with meals, transport and housekeeping provided. Moving to Querétaro last month to become an English teacher was a big change for her, so we were able to share our experiences.
In other news, this week in school we have been working on quite a few things. What is unique about lesson planning at this school is how we backward plan. We think about the big picture for the semester and how each individual task we assign will help us accomplish this goal. The class is not only about teaching English, but about teaching the students how they can contribute to society and make an impact on the future. We are discussing how each person has unique ideas, thoughts and opinions; however, sometimes it is difficult to express those feelings with words.The students are learning how to find their voice, whether it be through words, poems, music or art. Last week we learned about a young girl that wanted her story to be read by an editor. She was able to express her thoughts best through writing. This week we learned about an author who used poetry to recollect memories from his childhood past and express his emotions about being an all-star athlete in high school. I am hoping to incorporate multiple variations of self-expression throughout the semester. After reading the sports poem this week, the students were able to start constructing their own poems. I gave them a handful of magnets and boards to write their own story.It was great to hear the students also talking about people who have problems communicating and sometimes resort to violence in order to deal with their overwhelming emotions. I felt that it was an excellent point to discuss, since we are learning that there are more effective ways of communicating our feelings. I am pleasantly surprised that they are able to grasp these concepts and see the bigger picture. 😀
I have also had many reminders that they are only around 12 years old. 😀 The 6th grade class has been learning about run-on sentences and fragments. They are learning that a subject and predicate are required for a sentence to be complete. They are also learning that a run-on needs to be separated into two sentences or broken up with a conjunction. To practice, I had them write their own sentence fragment or run-on and exchange with a partner in order to correct the sentence.
Some of them created perfect examples of fragments and run-ons.Some of their creations served as a reminder of their age.I guess at least they were able to correct the sentence, so that is all that matters. The student turned the fragment into a sentence by writing, ¨I farted at the zoo and it killed an elephant.” Hah.
